1840年に鹿島岩吉氏が江戸・京橋に「大岩」の屋号で構えた大工棟梁の店が起源。
1934年に丹那トンネルを開通させ、1968年には日本初の柔構造超高層となる霞が関三井ビルを完成させた。1963年から27年続けて受注高首位に立ったゼネコン大手で、売上の3分の1を海外が占める。
