Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (1935)

Selection

In November 1971 he succeeded Seiichiro Hirota as Representative Director and President. He was promoted after five years as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. In the same month Executive Vice President Kizo Yasui became Director and Chairman. In the FY ended March 1971, the year before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥307.0 billion and net income ¥14.4 billion, with sales up 71% from ¥179.2 billion five years earlier.

Initiatives

In September 1975, during a recession in which textile companies were diversifying into non-fiber businesses, he flatly rejected moving away from fibers in an interview with the editor-in-chief of Nikkei Business. He called managers who turned defensive on the assumption of low growth losers, and urged risk-taking within the bounds of scratches that would not hurt the core. Non-consolidated results fell to sales of ¥298.4 billion and net income of ¥6.19 billion in the FY ended March 1972, and the company posted an ordinary loss of ¥5.9 billion in the FY ended March 1976 and ¥900 million in the FY ended March 1978. It recovered to sales of ¥480.9 billion, ordinary income of ¥32.0 billion and net income of ¥13.9 billion in the FY ended March 1980, and in June that year he became Representative Director and Chairman.
