Background
He joined Dai-ichi Life Insurance in April 1987. He became an Executive Officer in June 2014, Managing Executive Officer in April 2018 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2020, and in April 2021 became Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer, serving as group CFO. A career employee from the investment side, he had headed the Investment Division. He spent 23 years inside the mutual company, from joining in 1987 until demutualization in April 2010.
Selection
In April 2023 he moved from Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer to Representative Director, President and CEO, succeeding Seiji Inagaki, who became Representative Director and Chairman that month. In the fiscal year ended March 2023, the year before he took office, net income was ¥173.7 billion, less than half the previous year's ¥409.3 billion. The appointment put the CFO who had been minding the finances at the top in the year after profits fell.
Initiatives
In March 2024 the company acquired Benefit One through a tender offer, making it a subsidiary in May. Benefit One is the largest outsourced employee benefits provider in its industry, and the deal amounted to reaching for customer touchpoints outside insurance. Following demutualization in 2010, which ended the mutual company structure in place since its founding in 1902, and the move to a holding company in 2016, it brought a non-insurance business into the group as a source of earnings.
