Background

After a career at Sanwa Bank he moved to Nintendo in 2002, becoming a Director of the U.S. distributor Nintendo of America in January of that year and a Director of the parent company in June. From May 2006 he served as Chairman of the U.S. distributor. In June 2013 he became Managing Director and head of Corporate Management while also heading General Affairs, and from June 2014 was also in charge of Human Resources. His career was in overseas sales and administration rather than development.

Education: Hitotsubashi University, Faculty of Law

Selection

In September 2015 he succeeded Satoru Iwata as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥549.7 billion and operating income ¥24.8 billion, having only just returned to profit from an operating loss of ¥46.4 billion the previous year. Net sales had been shrinking since the ¥1,838.6 billion of the FY ended March 2009 and continued to do so through the FY ended March 2015. The appointment appears to have entrusted management until the next hardware launch to an officer who had led the U.S. distributor and administrative divisions.

Initiatives

He carried on the capital and business alliance with DeNA concluded in 2015 and, under the policy of bringing the company's own IP to smart devices, launched Nintendo Switch in March 2017. Consolidated net sales, ¥504.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016, his first year, fell to ¥489.0 billion in the FY ended March 2017 and then rose to ¥1,055.7 billion in the FY ended March 2018. Operating income also grew from ¥29.4 billion to ¥177.6 billion, and in June 2018 he handed the presidency to Shuntaro Furukawa.
