1871年に松本潜氏・幾島徳氏の兄弟が筑豊で始めた炭坑業が起源。
安川敬一郎氏が1908年に3炭砿を統一し、1962年に北海道の本岐鉱で国内初の水力採炭を始めた。
大手5社に次ぐ生産高を持つ炭鉱会社だったが、1969年に企業ぐるみ閉山を選んで解散した。
前身は1871年に松本潜氏と幾島徳氏が筑豊で創業した炭坑業。
1908年に明治・赤池・豊国の3炭砿を統一して明治鉱業を設立し、1937年に子会社の平山鉱業を合併した。
1946年に安川松本合名を合併。
炭鉱経営を軸に系列会社を水平統合した。
