1893年に住友総本店が九州の庄司砿を入手して始めた石炭業が起源。
北海道の赤平などで採炭を続け、1994年の赤平炭砿閉山で101年続いた国内の採炭から退いた。
現在は輸入炭の仕入と販売が売上の93%を占める石炭の会社で、麻生が議決権の57.01%を保有する。
