1893年に森下博氏が創業した薬種商森下南陽堂が起源。
1905年に懐中薬「仁丹」を発売し、1929年には「銀粒仁丹」を出して看板商品に育てた。仁丹を看板とする製薬会社で、1961年に東京証券取引所と大阪証券取引所に上場した。
