1935年に埼玉県川口市で創立された日本デイゼル工業が起源。
1936年にクルップ・ユンカース型ディーゼルエンジンの生産を始め、2006年にはボルボ社の資本参加を受けた。大型トラック・バスを主力とした商用車メーカーで、2010年にUDトラックスへ商号を改めた。
