1915年に安川敬一郎氏が第五郎氏らと福岡県黒崎町で設けた合資会社安川電機製作所が起源。
1969年にメカトロニクスを提唱し、1977年にアーク溶接ロボットMOTOMAN-L10を完成させた。
ACサーボとインバータのモーションコントロールとロボットを両輪とする産業用電機メーカーである。
