1914年に横浜の貿易商中村房次郎氏が岩手県の松尾鉱山を開発するため設立した会社が起源。
1934年に自前の鉄道を敷き、1952年には硫黄6万2000トン・硫化鉱65万トンでいずれも全国鉱山中首位となった。
本邦硫化鉱埋蔵量の86%を擁した鉱山会社だったが、1969年に操業を停止した。
