Background
He is a career employee who joined Chubu Electric Power in April 1984. He became an Executive Officer 32 years later, in April 2016, then Senior Managing Executive Officer and President of the Customer Service and Sales Company in April 2018, and a Director in June that year. Whereas his predecessors Satoru Katsuno and Akihisa Mizuno had both become President from Executive Vice President and head of the Corporate Strategy Headquarters, he rose from head of the in-house company responsible for sales.
Selection
In April 2020 he succeeded Satoru Katsuno as Representative Director and President. His appointment came in April 2020, the same month as the spin-off of transmission and distribution and retail and the move to a holding company structure. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2020, consolidated revenue was ¥3,065.9 billion, ordinary profit ¥191.8 billion and net income ¥163.4 billion. He was appointed less than two years after joining the board in June 2018.
Initiatives
He became President alongside the move to a holding company structure in April 2020 and took charge of expanding management into businesses beyond electricity. In the fiscal year ended March 2022, soaring fuel prices led to a consolidated operating loss of ¥53.8 billion and a net loss of ¥43.0 billion. In the following FY ended March 2023 the company returned to the black with consolidated revenue of ¥3,986.6 billion and net income of ¥38.2 billion, and in the FY ended March 2024 posted ordinary profit of ¥509.3 billion and net income of ¥403.1 billion, the largest profit of his tenure. In April 2025 his title was changed to President and CEO. Restarting the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station remained a management goal throughout his tenure, and at a 2022 directors' exchange of views he repeatedly called for drawing up and carrying out a roadmap toward restart. In January 2026 the company disclosed suspected improper conduct in setting the design basis ground motion for the conformity review and resolved to set up a special investigation committee made up solely of outside experts. Following the committee's report in September that year, it withdrew applications including those for permission to change the reactor installation of Units 3 and 4, and he stepped down effective September 30 to take management responsibility.
