Background

He joined Chubu Electric Power in April 1969. He rose to Director and head of the Tokyo Office in June 2003 and Managing Director, Executive Officer and head of the Sales Headquarters in June 2005, so his executive career before the presidency was confined to the Tokyo Office and the Sales Headquarters. Whereas the three Executive Vice Presidents in the executive listing for the fiscal year ended March 2009 had headed the thermal power, civil engineering and construction, and sales departments before taking charge of the Power Generation Headquarters or the Environment and Siting Headquarters, he had never held a post overseeing generating facilities. As of the FY ended March 2009 he held 22,467 shares.

Education: Seikei University, Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (1969)

Selection

In June 2006 he succeeded Fumio Kawaguchi as Representative Director and President. Kawaguchi had been President since June 2001, remained as Representative Director and Chairman after the change, and became chairman of the Chubu Economic Federation in May 2007. Mita joined the board in June 2003, two years later than the three Executive Vice Presidents in the same listing, all of whom became Directors in June 2001. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2006, consolidated revenue was ¥2,150.5 billion and ordinary profit ¥219.7 billion, but in the FY ended March 2008 ordinary profit fell to ¥123.4 billion on revenue of ¥2,432.8 billion.

Initiatives

At a board meeting on December 22, 2008, the company decided on a replacement plan to end operation of Units 1 and 2 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station and build Unit 6, and Units 1 and 2 ceased generation on January 30, 2009. The plan shut down Unit 1, with an output of 540,000 kW, and Unit 2, with 840,000 kW, and instead set out a 1.4 million kW-class Unit 6 with construction to start in fiscal 2015. The company booked ¥153.6 billion in losses related to the shutdown as an extraordinary loss, resulting in a consolidated net loss of ¥18.9 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2009.
