Selection

In June 1995 Kohei Abe moved to Chairman, and Executive Vice President Hiroji Ota became President. On the same day Kamesaburo Matsunaga retired as Chairman to become a senior adviser. The amended Electricity Business Act took effect in December that year. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 1995, consolidated revenue was ¥2,067.5 billion and ordinary profit ¥102.2 billion.

Initiatives

In July 1995, the month after he took office, he set up a Management Innovation Promotion Headquarters headed by the President, and in January 1996 revised the basic management policy for the first time in 15 years. The "Business Innovation 2001" program launched in April 1998 achieved its target of cutting employees to 19,300 by the end of fiscal 2001 a year early, reaching 18,851 at the end of fiscal 2000. In February 2000 he announced the abandonment of the Ashihama Nuclear Power Station plan, and in October that year reorganized the Management Innovation Promotion Headquarters into a Management Reform Headquarters.
