Background

He became a Director in June 1979 and a Managing Director in June 1983, and served as Executive Vice President from June 1989.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Law (1949)

Selection

In June 1991 Kamesaburo Matsunaga moved to Chairman, and Executive Vice President Kohei Abe became President. On the same day Seiichi Tanaka retired as Chairman to become a senior adviser. Share prices and land prices fell continuously from 1991, and capital investment turned to declines of around 10% or more in fiscal 1992 and fiscal 1993.

Initiatives

During his tenure Unit 1 of the Hekinan Thermal Power Station entered commercial operation in October 1991 and Unit 3 in April 1993, bringing coal-fired power, absent since the mid-1970s, back into the generation mix. In September 1993 Unit 4 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station (1,137,000 kW) began operating. As emergency power sources, the company pursued the repowering of the Chita and Chita No. 2 thermal power stations, which began operating in stages from September 1994. In April 1995, just before stepping down, he launched a mindset reform project.
