Background
Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1900, he graduated from the economics department of Keio University in 1922 and joined Kyushu Dento Tetsudo. Under the 1942 state consolidation of power distribution he became a director (riji) of Chubu Haiden, and its Managing Director in 1946. When Chubu Electric Power was launched in May 1951 he became Executive Vice President. Whereas Goro Inoue, a graduate of Tokyo Imperial University's Faculty of Engineering, was an engineer, Yokoyama's career lay in accounting and management.
Selection
In April 1961 he succeeded Goro Inoue as President. Inoue moved directly to Chairman and remains in the 1962 executive listing as Chairman. It was a promotion in line with seniority for someone who had supported the Inoue administration as Executive Vice President for the ten years since the company's launch. Revenue in the fiscal year ended March 1961, the year before his appointment, was ¥64.2 billion, 1.8 times the ¥36.4 billion of the FY ended March 1957, so the change came amid continuously swelling demand.
Initiatives
He moved construction functions out to subsidiaries, establishing Chubu Karyoku Koji in November 1961 and Chuden Koji in March 1962. In November 1962 he became a director of the Japan Atomic Power Company, beginning the company's involvement in nuclear power. In March 1968 he also became vice chairman of the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In the fiscal year ended March 1963, revenue was ¥85.7 billion and ordinary profit ¥8.8 billion, up from ¥64.2 billion and ¥5.1 billion in the year before his appointment.
