Background

Born in Tokyo in 1899, he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of Tokyo Imperial University in 1923, joined Toho Electric Power and served as head of the construction section in Nagoya in 1930. Under the 1942 state consolidation of power distribution he became a director (riji) of Chubu Haiden, and in 1946 rose to Executive Vice President of that company. Although he joined the power industry as an engineer, his wartime and postwar experience was gained on the management side of a distribution company.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering (1923)

Selection

In May 1951 Chubu Electric Power was launched under the Electric Utility Industry Reorganization Order, receiving facilities through investment and transfer from Chubu Haiden and Nippon Hassoden, and he became its first President. There was no predecessor; he moved over from his position as Executive Vice President of Chubu Haiden, where he had handled the practical work of the reorganization. Michio Yokoyama, a Managing Director at the same Chubu Haiden, became Executive Vice President alongside him, so the distribution company's management moved intact into the core of the new company.

Initiatives

He surrounded the core business with subsidiaries, establishing Chuden Kogyo in June 1953, Eiraku Fudosan in April 1957, Eiraku Jidosha in October that year and Chuden Building in June 1960, and making Nippon Taika Bofu a subsidiary through a share acquisition in March 1955. Outside the company he became a director of the Japan Atomic Power Company and vice chairman of the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1957, and an executive director of the Federation of Economic Organizations and a director of Tokai Iron and Steel in 1958. Revenue grew from ¥36.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1957 to ¥64.2 billion in the FY ended March 1961.
