Background

He joined the company in April 1964, became a Director and general manager of the Materials Department in June 1997 and a Director and head of the Nagoya Branch in June 1999. He rose to Managing Director in December that year and became President while still heading the Nagoya Branch.

Selection

In June 2001 Koji Ota moved to Chairman, and Fumio Kawaguchi, Managing Director and head of the Nagoya Branch, became Representative Director and President. Partial liberalization of electricity retailing had begun in March 2000, the year before, and in April 2001, just before his appointment, the company had drawn up a management reform roadmap. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2001, consolidated revenue was ¥2,252.8 billion and ordinary profit ¥155.3 billion.

Initiatives

In July 2001, the month after he took office, he created a Management Strategy Council and a Corporate Strategy Headquarters, and in 2003 added headquarters for network, generation, IT and affiliated business promotion, creating an eight-headquarters structure. In December 2002 he set up a Compliance Promotion Council and in March 2003 adopted the Chubu Electric Power Compliance Declaration. In December 2003 he announced the freezing of the Suzu Nuclear Power Station plan in Ishikawa Prefecture, and in January 2005 Unit 5 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station entered commercial operation. In March 2006 he adopted a CSR Declaration.
