1920年に石原廣一郎氏が設立した南洋鉱業公司が起源。
1950年に四日市で除草剤の製造を始め、1954年には同地に硫酸法酸化チタン工場を新設して化学メーカーへ転じた。酸化チタンと農薬を二本柱とする化学メーカーで、2025年3月期の売上高は1,452億円。
