Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in April 1965. He became a Director in June 1992 and moved to the board of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi when it was formed in April 1996. He became Managing Director in June that year and Managing Executive Officer in June 2001 before becoming Deputy President in June 2002. A career employee who worked only at Mitsubishi Bank and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, he also served as a Director of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, before its integration, from June 2003.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1965)

Selection

In June 2004 he succeeded Shigemitsu Miki as President of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and President of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group. The following July, UFJ told Sumitomo Trust and Banking it was withdrawing from the sale of its trust business and decided to enter integration talks with Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group. UFJ Holdings had posted a net loss of ¥402.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2004, and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group also proposed an equal merger and a huge capital injection, setting off a bidding contest. From the month after taking office he was a party to the integration talks.

Initiatives

On October 1, 2005, Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group and UFJ Holdings merged to form Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, with total assets of about ¥190 trillion. The bank merger was postponed three months to prepare the systems integration, and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ was formed in January 2006. In October 2008 the group invested $9 billion in Morgan Stanley, taking about 21% on a fully diluted basis, and in November that year made UnionBanCal Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary. In November 2009 it agreed with Morgan Stanley on the integration of their securities businesses in Japan.
