Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in April 1974. He rose through the bank, becoming Executive Officer in June 2001, Managing Director in June 2005 and Senior Managing Director in October 2008, and became President of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ in April 2012. At the holding company, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, he also became an Executive Officer in July 2004 and a Director in June 2010, serving as an officer of both the bank and the holding company before rising to President.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Law (1974)

Selection

In April 2013 he succeeded Katsunori Nagayasu as President of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. He had been President of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ since April 2012, making him the third, after Nobuo Kuroyanagi and Katsunori Nagayasu, to move from bank President to holding company President. In the fiscal year ended March 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated ordinary income was ¥4,763.2 billion and net income attributable to owners of the parent ¥852.6 billion. With domestic earning power hard to grow, he appears to have been tasked with acquiring overseas commercial banks.

Initiatives

In December 2013 the group acquired about 72% of Bank of Ayudhya in Thailand for about ¥536.0 billion and made it a consolidated subsidiary. In June 2015 it moved to a company-with-nominating-committee structure, and he became Representative Executive Officer and President. In April 2019, the month he stepped down, it made Bank Danamon in Indonesia a consolidated subsidiary. Over his six years, Asian commercial banks were brought under the group one after another.
