Background
He joined Mitsubishi Bank in 1943. He became Deputy President in December 1982 and President in June 1986. A career employee who spent 43 years at Mitsubishi Bank, he was promoted from Deputy President, like his predecessor Hajime Yamada.
Selection
In June 1986 he succeeded Hajime Yamada as President, promoted after three and a half years as Deputy President. During his predecessor's term, Mitsubishi Bank had acquired the US Bank of California in June 1984, and in January 1986, five months before he took office, it had set up a commercial bank in Australia. As of March 1985, the major shareholders were, in order, Meiji Life, Tokio Marine, Dai-ichi Life, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Nippon Life, with Mitsubishi group insurers and operating companies at the top.

In October 1988 Mitsubishi Bank listed its shares on the London Stock Exchange. In February 1989 it also listed on three Swiss exchanges and on the Paris and New York exchanges. It was a four-year tenure in which, while carrying the Bank of California acquired under his predecessor, the bank also reached overseas on the capital markets side.
