Background
He joined Mitsubishi Bank in April 1953. He became Deputy President in February 1992, and President in January 1998, one year and nine months after The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi was formed. He was a career employee who spent 45 years at Mitsubishi Bank and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi alone.
Selection
In January 1998 he succeeded Tasuku Takagaki as President. The first President, Takagaki, came from the former Bank of Tokyo, and the second was a career employee of the former Mitsubishi Bank. It was a change less than two years after the merger at a bank that started with total assets of about ¥72 trillion, taking the form of drawing the top executive from each of the two parent banks in turn.
Initiatives
From late 1999 into early 2000, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi secretly negotiated a business integration with Sanwa Bank, later the core of UFJ. The two banks shared the view that they could form an ideal complementary relationship, and by January 2000 they came close to a meeting of their top executives, but the integration did not happen. In April 2000 The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Trust and Banking and Nippon Trust Bank reached a basic agreement to integrate by establishing a holding company, and two months later Kishi became Chairman.
