Background
He joined Mitsubishi Bank in March 1958. He became Deputy President in 1997 and President of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in June 2000. When the holding company was established in April 2001 he also became the first President of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group. He was a career employee who spent 42 years at a single bank.
Selection
In June 2000 he succeeded Satoru Kishi as President. Two months before he took office, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Trust and Banking and Nippon Trust Bank had reached a basic agreement to integrate under a holding company, and the month after, Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust and Banking reached a basic agreement of the same kind. It was a change that handed him the practical work of setting up the holding company and of a reorganization that was consolidating the industry into four groups.
Initiatives
In April 2001 The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Trust and Banking and Nippon Trust Bank established Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group through a share transfer and listed its shares on the Tokyo, Osaka, New York and London stock exchanges. In October that year Mitsubishi Trust and Banking merged with Nippon Trust Bank and Tokyo Trust Bank. Concluding that an alliance with a major overseas firm was essential for investment banking, the group took negotiations with Morgan Stanley as far as a draft contract. But just before a meeting with Chairman Purcell, the September 11, 2001 attacks led to the alliance being postponed indefinitely.
