Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in 1926 and became President in 1964 after serving as Deputy President. A career employee who spent 38 years inside the bank before becoming President, he was promoted from Deputy President like his predecessor Makoto Usami. After stepping down as President in 1970 he became Chairman.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics) (1926)

Selection

In 1964 he succeeded Makoto Usami as President. During his predecessor's term, Mitsubishi Bank, as chair of the bankers' association, had opposed the bill on temporary measures to promote designated industries, and in the securities slump from 1964 it joined the founding of Japan Joint Securities at the Finance Minister's request. Net income for the fiscal year ended March 1962, two years before he took office, was ¥4.6 billion.

Initiatives

Around October 1968, Dai-Ichi Bank President Jusaburo Hasegawa confided plans for a merger with Mitsubishi Bank to Kaoru Inoue of Dai-Ichi Bank. At the end of that year Inoue visited President Wataru Tajitsu and asked that the matter go no further. When the Yomiuri Shimbun reported the merger on the morning of January 1, 1969, it was scrapped within two weeks, and President Hasegawa and several other officers resigned. Dai-Ichi Bank announced a merger with Nippon Kangyo Bank in March 1971.
