Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in April 1988. He became manager of the Senju branch in 2010 and General Manager of Corporate Planning in 2012, advancing to Executive Officer in 2014 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2019. He became President of MUFG Bank in April 2021, and after five years in that post became Representative Executive Officer, President and Group CEO of the holding company in April 2026. He is a career employee who came up through planning and administrative departments.

He had been President of MUFG Bank since April 2021, so the pattern of the bank's President succeeding to the presidency of the holding company resumed after the interlude of Kamezawa's term. During his time as bank President, thefts from safe deposit boxes by a former employee came to light in November 2024, and in January 2025 disciplinary action against five officers involved, including himself, was announced. In the fiscal year ended March 2026, the year he inherited, consolidated ordinary income was ¥14,620.8 billion and net income attributable to owners of the parent ¥2,427.2 billion.

In April 2026 Junichi Hanzawa, previously President of MUFG Bank, succeeded Hironori Kamezawa as Representative Executive Officer, President and Group CEO. In November 2024 MUFG Bank disclosed that former employees at its Nerima and Tamagawa branches had stolen cash and gold from customers' safe deposit boxes, and in January 2025 it announced disciplinary action against five officers including Hanzawa, along with measures to prevent recurrence, and submitted a report to the Financial Services Agency. In the fiscal year ended March 2026, the year before he took office, consolidated ordinary income was ¥14,620.8 billion and ordinary profit ¥3,410.2 billion, up from ¥2,669.5 billion the year before.
