Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in May 1970. He became a Director of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in June 1997, then moved among the trust subsidiaries as Managing Director of Nippon Trust Bank in June 2000 and Managing Director of Mitsubishi Trust and Banking in October 2001. He returned to The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi as Managing Director in June 2002, became Senior Managing Director in January 2005 and Deputy President in May that year. At the holding company he became Director and Deputy President in June 2006, and from April 2008 also served as President of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1970)

Selection

In April 2010 he succeeded Nobuo Kuroyanagi as President of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. He had been President of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ since April 2008, moving up from bank President to holding company President. The group had posted a net loss attributable to owners of the parent of ¥257.0 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009 and had just completed its $9 billion investment in Morgan Stanley and made UnionBanCal Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary. The appointment appears to have handed him the overseas businesses expanded in the midst of the crisis.

Initiatives

In May 2010 the group combined its Japanese securities businesses with Morgan Stanley in a joint venture, launching Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities. The $9 billion investment decided in October 2008 thus led, through this joint venture, to joint management of a domestic securities business. The history section of the annual securities report lists the next entry as making Bank of Ayudhya a consolidated subsidiary in December 2013, and no other reorganization appears during his tenure.
