Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in 1932. Before the war he worked at the London branch, and after it he served as the first manager of the New York branch. Opened in October 1952, that branch was Mitsubishi Bank's foothold for returning to overseas business after the peace treaty. He became President in October 1970 after serving as Deputy President.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law) (1932)

Selection

In October 1970 he succeeded Wataru Tajitsu as President; Tajitsu moved to Chairman that year. During his predecessor's term a plan to merge with Dai-Ichi Bank had surfaced and was scrapped within two weeks of being reported in January 1969. In the fiscal year ended March 1970, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥196.6 billion and net income ¥19.7 billion.

Initiatives

The policy set out at the April 1971 branch managers' meeting was to expand beyond the existing scope of foreign exchange business into overseas lending and securities transactions. This was the concrete form of internationalization, which he made the top priority when he drew up the second three-year plan after becoming President. In January 1972 Mitsubishi Bank of California was established in Los Angeles, the bank's first overseas local subsidiary.
