1936年に設立された宇部曹達工業が起源。
1969年に松阪工場でフロート板ガラスの生産を始め、1989年にフォードモーターとの合弁でカーレックスガラスを設立した。
ガラスとフッ素化学品を両輪とする化学メーカーである。
