Background

He is a career insider who joined Toshiba in April 1979. From June 2010 to June 2014 he served as Representative Director and President of Toshiba Medical Systems (now Canon Medical Systems), leading the medical equipment operating company for four years. At the parent company he became General Manager of Healthcare Business Development in October 2013 and Corporate Senior Vice President in June 2014, and Director, Representative Executive Officer and Corporate Senior Executive Vice President in September 2015.

Education: University of Tokyo, College of Liberal Arts, Basic Science (1979)

Selection

In June 2016 he succeeded Masashi Muromachi as Director, Representative Executive Officer and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, the company posted a loss before taxes of ¥499.4 billion and a net loss of ¥460.0 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥4,346.5 billion, and on December 25, 2015, the Financial Services Agency had ordered an administrative fine over the accounting irregularities. After stepping down as president in April 2018, he returned in April 2021 as Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO while remaining Chairman of the Board, and served until March 2022. The appointment appears to have entrusted the recovery to a man from medical equipment who had no part in the accounting irregularities.

Initiatives

In his first term he decided to sell the semiconductor memory business, the company's top earner, separating Toshiba Memory (now Kioxia). The fiscal year ended March 2017 brought a net loss of ¥965.7 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥4,043.7 billion, but FY ended March 2018 swung to net income of ¥804.0 billion. In FY ended March 2021, between his two terms, consolidated net sales were ¥3,054.4 billion, ¥1,292.1 billion less than the ¥4,346.5 billion of FY ended March 2016.
