Background

He joined ShinMaywa Industries in April 1990 and moved to Structural Dynamics Research Corporation of the U.S. in September 1999. In February 2010 he became Representative Director and President of Siemens PLM Software's Japanese subsidiary and Vice President of its U.S. headquarters, and in September 2015, as Senior Executive Officer of Siemens, headed both its Digital Factory and Process & Drives divisions. He joined Toshiba in October 2018 and became Chief Digital Officer for the corporate digital business. He is an outsider with a technical background who worked consistently in software for manufacturers.

In March 2022 he succeeded Satoshi Tsunakawa as Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO, three years and five months after joining in October 2018; his immediately preceding post was Corporate Senior Vice President and President of Toshiba Digital Solutions. In the fiscal year ended March 2022, the year he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,337.0 billion and income before taxes ¥239.1 billion, a recovery from the loss before taxes of ¥47.5 billion in FY ended March 2020. The appointment put an outsider who had led the digital business at the top in his fourth year with the company.

Initiatives

In 2023 the company accepted an acquisition of about ¥2 trillion by a consortium led by Japan Industrial Partners and decided to take its shares private. In the fiscal year ended March 2023, consolidated net sales were ¥3,361.7 billion, income before taxes ¥189.0 billion and net income ¥126.6 billion, with both income before taxes and net income down from ¥239.1 billion and ¥194.7 billion the year before.
