Selection

In August 1972 his predecessor Toshio Doko moved to Chairman, and Tamaki, then Executive Vice President, became president. Doko was an outsider who had joined Toshiba's board in November 1957 while remaining President of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, and became Toshiba's president in May 1965. Tamaki had spent six years as Executive Vice President from May 1966, and in the same month, August 1972, Shuji Nakanishi, who joined in 1933, was added as Executive Vice President. In the fiscal year ended March 1972, before he took office, ordinary income was ¥10.1 billion, down from ¥14.4 billion the year before.

Initiatives

His four years as president coincided with the first oil crisis. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥626.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1973 to ¥893.9 billion in FY ended March 1976, while ordinary income peaked at ¥28.7 billion in FY ended March 1974 and fell to ¥11.9 billion in FY ended March 1976. In November 1972, three months after taking office, he also became a director of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, continuing the cross-directorships between the two companies set up by his predecessor. In June 1976 he moved to Chairman, and that same month Toshio Doko stepped back to Director and Senior Advisor.
