Background

He joined Toshiba in April 1975 and became Vice President of the Semiconductor Company in April 2004, taking charge of the semiconductor business. He advanced to Corporate Vice President in June 2004, Corporate Senior Vice President in June 2005 and Corporate Executive Vice President in June 2006, reaching Director and Representative Executive Officer and Corporate Senior Executive Vice President in June 2008. In June 2012 he stepped back to Senior Advisor and left the executive ranks, returning to the board in June 2013. The directors' section of the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2015 records his Toshiba shareholding as 112,000 shares.

Education: Waseda University, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Electro-Communications, Master's Program (1975)

Selection

In July 2015, while remaining Chairman of the Board, he also became Representative Executive Officer and President, succeeding Hisao Tanaka. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, just before, the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥122.3 billion and a net loss of ¥37.8 billion. The annual securities report for that year was filed on September 7, 2015, more than five months after the fiscal year-end. The three internally promoted directors listed in the same report joined between 1978 and 1982, three to seven years after Muromachi joined in 1975. Rather than drawing on the next internal generation, the change brought back into an executive role a chairman who had once stepped back to Senior Advisor.

Initiatives

Even after taking on the presidency he remained a member of the nominating and compensation committees, so the head of execution sat on the committees that decided director candidates and executive pay. During his tenure, in the fiscal year ended March 2016, consolidated net sales were ¥4,346.5 billion, the operating loss ¥499.4 billion and the net loss ¥460.0 billion, with sales down ¥504.6 billion from ¥4,851.1 billion the year before.
