Background

He was born on December 20, 1950, and joined Toshiba in April 1973. He became Vice President of the PC & Network Company in April 2006, Corporate Vice President that June, Corporate Senior Vice President in June 2008 and Corporate Executive Vice President in June 2009, and became Director, Representative Executive Officer and Corporate Senior Executive Vice President in June 2011. It took him 33 years from joining to become an executive. Hidejiro Shimomitsu, who also became Vice President of the PC & Network Company in April 2006, had joined in April 1976, three years later, yet held the same rank.

In June 2013 he succeeded Norio Sasaki as Representative Executive Officer and President, while Sasaki became Vice Chairman of the Board. Tanaka had become a Director in June 2011, so he was promoted after two years on the board. His predecessor Sasaki had also become president after just one year as a Director, making two consecutive presidents with short board experience. Masashi Muromachi, who joined in April 1975 and became Director, Representative Executive Officer and Corporate Senior Executive Vice President in June 2008, had become Senior Advisor in June 2012 and left the board.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2015, consolidated net sales were ¥4,851.1 billion, with a loss before taxes of ¥122.3 billion and a net loss of ¥37.8 billion. Following the discovery of accounting irregularities, he resigned as president in July 2015. On December 25, 2015, the Financial Services Agency ordered Toshiba to pay an administrative fine for false statements in its annual securities reports and other filings. In FY ended March 2016, the year after he left, the loss before taxes swelled to ¥499.4 billion and the net loss to ¥460.0 billion.
