Background

He was born on June 1, 1949, and joined Toshiba in April 1972. He moved steadily along the nuclear and power track: General Manager of the Nuclear Energy Division of the Power and Industrial Systems Company in April 2003, Corporate Vice President in June 2005, Corporate Vice President and President of the Power Systems Company in April 2006, and Corporate Executive Vice President responsible for the Social Infrastructure Group in June 2007. In June 2008 he became Director, Representative Executive Officer and Corporate Senior Executive Vice President responsible for the Social Infrastructure Group.

Education: Waseda University, School of Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (1972)

Selection

In June 2009 he succeeded Atsutoshi Nishida as Representative Executive Officer and President. He had become a Director only the previous June, so he was promoted after one year on the board. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, just before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥6,654.5 billion with a net loss of ¥343.6 billion, so the change came amid a loss. The appointment appears to have put the Executive Vice President responsible for social infrastructure, including nuclear power, at the top right after the slide into the red.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2011, consolidated net sales were ¥6,398.5 billion and net income ¥137.8 billion, a return to profit from the net loss of ¥343.6 billion in the year before he took office. He stepped down as president in June 2013 and became Vice Chairman of the Board. The accounting during his tenure was later called into question as accounting irregularities, and on December 25, 2015, the Financial Services Agency ordered Toshiba to pay an administrative fine for false statements in its annual securities reports and other filings.
