Background
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1910, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1934 and joined the company that April. He became General Manager of Finance in July 1962 and a Director in May 1964, and in May 1966 was promoted to Senior Managing Director without passing through Managing Director. He became Director and Executive Vice President in May 1968 and spent eight years in that post before becoming president. He was an administrative executive who came up through finance.
Selection
In June 1976 his predecessor Keizo Tamaki moved to Chairman, and Iwata, then Executive Vice President, became president. In the same month Toshio Doko stepped back to Director and Senior Advisor, and Shoichi Saba and Takeshi Hamano were named Executive Vice Presidents. Iwata's eight years as Executive Vice President since May 1968 were long compared with the two other Executive Vice Presidents, both appointed in June 1976. In the fiscal year ended March 1976, before he took office, ordinary income was ¥11.9 billion, less than half the ¥28.7 billion of FY ended March 1974 just two years earlier.
Initiatives
Non-consolidated net sales passed ¥1 trillion at ¥1,060.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1978 and reached ¥1,427.7 billion in FY ended March 1980. Ordinary income also grew 3.2 times, from ¥23.4 billion in FY ended March 1977 to ¥75.3 billion in FY ended March 1980. In June 1979 he increased the number of Executive Vice Presidents to four, adding Ryuji Imai, who had been President of Toshiba Shoji, and Tomio Tanatsugu, head of the Information Systems Equipment Division. That same month Taiji Ubukata, newly appointed President of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, joined Toshiba's board.
