He was born on December 29, 1943, and joined Toshiba in May 1975. He was promoted to Director in June 1997, Corporate Vice President in June 1998, Corporate Senior Vice President in June 2000 and Director and Corporate Executive Vice President in June 2003, and became Representative Executive Officer and President in June 2005. It took 30 years from joining to the presidency, and eight years from becoming a Director.

In June 2005 he succeeded Tadashi Okamura as Representative Executive Officer and President. Okamura had joined in April 1962 and become president in June 2000, and moved to Chairman of the Board at the time of the change. The four Representative Executive Officers and Corporate Senior Executive Vice Presidents at the time he took office had joined in various years from 1968 to 1976, so Nishida, who joined in 1975, was not ahead in seniority by joining year. In the fiscal year ended March 2006, right after he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥6,343.5 billion and net income ¥78.2 billion.
Initiatives
In October 2006 the company acquired the Westinghouse group, adding nuclear power as a mainstay business. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥6,343.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥7,668.1 billion in FY ended March 2008, when net income was ¥127.4 billion. In FY ended March 2009 net sales fell to ¥6,654.5 billion and the company swung to a net loss of ¥343.6 billion, and that same June, in 2009, he stepped down as president.
