Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Tokyo Imperial University in 1926, joined Tokyo Dento and moved to Kanto Haiden in August 1942. He became a director (riji) of Kanto Haiden in May 1946 and its Managing Director in October that year, and joined the board of Tokyo Electric Power in May 1951. He rose to Managing Director of that company in September 1952 and Executive Vice President in 1954. In 1960 he also became representative secretary of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (now University of Tokyo) (1926)

Selection

He moved to Managing Director in December 1958, returned to Executive Vice President in November 1959 and became President in July 1961, with his predecessor Kinichi Aoki moving to Chairman that same month. Whereas Aoki was an outside executive brought in from the presidency of Shinagawa Refractories, Kikawada followed the internal path running from Tokyo Dento through Kanto Haiden to Tokyo Electric Power, and was promoted 35 years after joining.

Initiatives

He became chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies in April 1964 and of the Central Electric Power Council in May that year, and chairman of the Economic Council in April 1966. In 1966 construction began on Unit 1 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which entered commercial operation in March 1971 with an output of 460,000 kW. Revenue grew from ¥120.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1961 to ¥531.8 billion in the FY ended March 1971. In May 1971 he moved to Chairman, and Hisao Mizuno succeeded him as President.
