Background

He graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in 1922, joined Shinagawa Refractories in May 1927 and became its President in May 1938. He became a director of Japan Securities Finance in February 1950 and of Tokyo Electric Power in May 1951. His career before joining the TEPCO board included no work in the power industry. After becoming President, he also served as Chairman of Shinagawa Refractories from January 1959.

Selection

He became President in December 1958, seven years after joining the board in May 1951, and was appointed while still President of Shinagawa Refractories. In the same December 1958, Executive Vice President Kazutaka Kikawada moved to Managing Director. The chairmanship had been held since May 1954 by Reinosuke Suga, brought in from Dowa Mining, so both President and Chairman were men from outside the company.

Initiatives

His tenure as President lasted about three years, from December 1958 to July 1961. Revenue grew from ¥78.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1958 to ¥120.4 billion in the FY ended March 1961, and ordinary profit from ¥3.3 billion to ¥9.0 billion. In May 1959 he became chairman of the Japan Electric Association. In July 1961 he moved to Chairman, and Kazutaka Kikawada succeeded him as President.
