Background

He joined the company in April 1988 and rose to Managing Executive Officer in June 2015. He became President of TEPCO Energy Partner, the retail company launched in the April 2016 split, and also a Director in June that year. It took him 27 years from joining to Managing Executive Officer, and he is a career employee with no experience at other companies. Tokyo Electric Power moved to a holding company structure in April 2016, spinning off three companies for fuel and thermal power, transmission and distribution, and retail.

In June 2017 he succeeded Naomi Hirose as Representative Executive Officer and President, a little over a year after the move to a holding company structure and after a year as President of the retail subsidiary. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2017, revenue was ¥5,357.7 billion and operating profit ¥258.7 billion, the second straight year of declining revenue from ¥6,802.4 billion in the FY ended March 2015. The largest shareholder was the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation, holding 54.69% as of the FY ended March 2015.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2023 revenue grew to ¥8,112.2 billion, but the company posted an operating loss of ¥229.0 billion and a net loss of ¥123.6 billion. In the following FY ended March 2024 it returned to operating profit of ¥278.9 billion and net income of ¥267.8 billion. In the FY ended March 2026 it secured operating profit of ¥337.7 billion yet posted a net loss of ¥454.3 billion. He also spoke about restarting the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station.
