Background

He joined Daiwa Securities in April 1971, became General Manager of Underwriting Department No. 1 in July 1991 and a Director in June 1997. He became head of Investment Banking in May 1998 and Managing Director in June that year, took charge of the Corporate Planning Group in April 1999, and from July 2000 was responsible for corporate planning, IR and public relations. In June 2002 he moved to Daiwa Securities SMBC as Senior Managing Director and head of Investment Banking, becoming its Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in June 2003. His shareholding in the officers' list for the fiscal year ended March 2010 was 123,000 shares.

Selection

In June 2004 he succeeded Yoshinari Hara as Director, Representative Executive Officer and President (CEO), also serving as Representative Director and President of Daiwa Securities. At the holding company he had risen no higher than Senior Managing Director, from June 2001, and became President without serving as Deputy President. The group had posted a consolidated net loss of ¥130.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002 and a loss of ¥6.3 billion in the FY ended March 2003, and the change came just as it returned to net income of ¥42.6 billion in the FY ended March 2004. His title on appointment also noted responsibility for the retail division.

Initiatives

In December 2009 the group dissolved its wholesale joint venture with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, made Daiwa Securities SMBC a wholly owned subsidiary, and in April 2010 renamed it Daiwa Securities Capital Markets. In April 2011 it established Daiwa Next Bank, entering banking as a securities group. The FY ended March 2009 saw a consolidated ordinary loss of ¥141.1 billion and a net loss of ¥85.0 billion, the FY ended March 2010 ordinary profit of ¥102.9 billion and net income of ¥43.4 billion, and the FY ended March 2011 another net loss of ¥37.3 billion. In April 2011 he handed the presidency to Takashi Hibino.
