Background
He joined the company in 1975 and built his career in oil and energy. He became an Executive Officer in 2005 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2008, and from April 2010 served as Senior Managing Executive Officer and President and CEO of Marubeni America. He became Director and Executive Vice President in June 2012 and President in April 2013. Replacing Teruo Asada, who had come up through administration, he marked the return of a President from a commodity division.
Selection
In April 2013 he rose from Director and Executive Vice President to succeed Teruo Asada as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥4,896.0 billion, operating income ¥499.6 billion and net income ¥130.1 billion, a period spanning the move to International Financial Reporting Standards from fiscal 2012. His experience leading Marubeni America appears to have led to an appointment aimed at expanding overseas investment.
Initiatives
In fiscal 2013 the company completed the acquisition of the major U.S. grain company Gavilon, building a structure that put it among the world's top grain handlers. After the acquisition, net income fell from ¥210.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2014 to ¥62.2 billion in the FY ended March 2016. It then recovered to ¥211.2 billion in the FY ended March 2018 and ¥230.8 billion in the FY ended March 2019, his last year, when consolidated revenue was ¥7,401.2 billion.
