Background
He joined Daido Boeki in March 1936 and moved to Marubeni in the 1949 reorganization. He became a Director in 1963, Managing Director in 1965, Senior Managing Director in 1974 and Executive Vice President in May 1975. Marubeni was established in December 1949 as a second company of Daiken Sangyo, and Ikeda was a career employee of 45 years who had stayed in the same line of business since before the split.
Selection
In June 1981 he succeeded Taiichiro Matsuo as President, with Matsuo becoming Chairman. In the fiscal year ended March 1981, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥10,184.5 billion and ordinary income ¥17.4 billion, down from ¥25.2 billion the previous year. Marubeni had been at the center of bribery in the 1976 Lockheed scandal, and with the aftermath still unfolding, the post went to the most senior officer, who had been Executive Vice President for six years.
Initiatives
His tenure lasted one year and ten months, from June 1981 to April 1983. Revenue was flat, from ¥11,547.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1982 to ¥11,631.3 billion in the FY ended March 1983, while net income fell from ¥5.2 billion to ¥0.3 billion. In the energy division, it had been pointed out internally in 1979 that the company's crude oil volume was only a third of Mitsubishi Corporation's and half of C. Itoh's.
