Background
He joined the company in 1966 and built his career in pulp and paper, serving as General Manager of Printing Paper and head of the Pulp and Paper Division. He became a Director in 1996, Managing Director in 1999 and Senior Managing Director in 2001, and President in April 2003. His predecessor Toru Tsuji had also headed the Pulp, Paper and Timber Division, making this the second straight Marubeni President from pulp and paper.
Selection
In April 2003 he rose from Senior Managing Director to succeed Toru Tsuji as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥8,793.3 billion and net income ¥30.3 billion, a recovery from the ¥117.7 billion net loss of the FY ended March 1999. In March 2002 Nikkei Business described Marubeni, which had been slow to dispose of its bad assets, as "a microcosm of Japan's economy in the lost decade."
Initiatives
By the year before he took office, Marubeni had cut its group companies to about 700, integrated its steel business with C. Itoh and secured a ¥400 billion domestic credit line. During his tenure he pressed ahead with this sweeping disposal of bad assets and the rebuilding of the company's finances. Consolidated revenue went from ¥8,793.3 billion in the year before he took office to ¥8,686.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 and ¥10,631.6 billion in the FY ended March 2008, while net income rose from ¥30.3 billion to ¥80.1 billion and then ¥147.2 billion.
