Background

Until becoming President in June 1987 he served as Director and Executive Vice President, in charge of improving the health of affiliated companies and cleaning up those in the red. Marubeni had expanded its trading rights beyond textiles through the absorption of Takashimaya Iida in 1955 and the merger with Totsu in 1966, and the cleanup of loss-making subsidiaries that Tatsuno handled was the work of dealing with the aftermath of that expansion.

Selection

In June 1987 he succeeded Kazuo Haruna as President, with Haruna becoming Chairman. In March of that year Haruna had acknowledged the distorted earnings structure of general trading companies, the weakness of their domestic business and the fragmentation of personnel by vertically divided organizations, and the change handed that agenda straight to his successor. The appointment promoted the Executive Vice President who had handled the cleanup of loss-making affiliates.

Initiatives

He served five years and two months, from taking office in June 1987 to stepping down in August 1992. In the fiscal year ended March 1992, consolidated revenue was ¥18,657.4 billion, ordinary income ¥49.6 billion and net income ¥11.2 billion. When he stepped down, Executive Vice President Iwao Toriumi took over.
