Background
He joined Daido Boeki in March 1940 and moved to Marubeni in 1949. He served as General Manager for Europe and head of the London branch in 1966, became a Director in 1968, Managing Director in 1972, Senior Managing Director in 1975 and Executive Vice President in 1979, and was stationed at the Osaka head office from 1981. He was a career employee who had served both in overseas offices and at the Osaka head office.
Selection
In April 1983 he succeeded Matsujiro Ikeda as President. In the fiscal year ended March 1983, the year before he took office, net income was ¥0.3 billion on revenue of ¥11,631.3 billion, down from ¥5.2 billion the previous year. Marubeni had slipped in the industry after the 1976 Lockheed scandal, and an Executive Vice President who had been General Manager for Europe and stationed at the Osaka head office took over its rebuilding.
Initiatives
In April 1985 Nikkei Business ran a feature on Marubeni's revival scenario, describing its decline in the industry after the Lockheed scandal as a voyage without a chart. In the fiscal year ended March 1985, revenue was ¥13,563.8 billion, ordinary income ¥37.7 billion and net income ¥8.1 billion, a recovery from ¥0.3 billion the year before he took office. In March 1987 Haruna acknowledged the distorted earnings structure of general trading companies and the weakness of their domestic business, and criticized the way vertically divided organizations fragmented personnel. This self-examination set the agenda of reviving Marubeni as a strong trading company.
