Background

He is a career employee who joined Toppan Printing (now TOPPAN Holdings) in April 1979. He became a Director in June 2009, Managing Director in June 2012 and Senior Managing Director in June 2016, and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2018. He rose to President the year after becoming Executive Vice President, appointed after one year in that post just like his predecessor Shingo Kaneko.

Education: Yamagata University, Faculty of Engineering, Polymer Chemistry (1979)

Selection

In June 2019 he succeeded Shingo Kaneko as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,464.7 billion and operating income ¥45.7 billion, with operating income down ¥6.6 billion from ¥52.3 billion the previous year. Net sales had remained below the ¥1,670.3 billion of the FY ended March 2008 for ten years. With net sales stalled around ¥1.5 trillion, the appointment appears to have entrusted the future to a career employee who rose from Executive Vice President after one year.

Initiatives

In October 2023 the company moved to a holding company structure and changed its name from Toppan Printing to TOPPAN Holdings. In 2025 it acquired the flexible packaging and thermoformed container business of Sonoco of the United States for about $1.8 billion and listed Tekscend Photomask, the spun-off semiconductor photomask business, on the TSE Prime Market. Consolidated net sales reached ¥1,805.0 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2026, exceeding the ¥1,670.3 billion of the FY ended March 2008.
