Background
Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1916, he graduated from the printing arts course of Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Technology in March 1936 and joined Toppan Printing in July of that year. He worked on the manufacturing floor, becoming head of operations at the Itabashi plant in 1951 and General Manager of Engineering in September 1958, then became a Director in December 1959 and Managing Director in December 1960. He became Senior Managing Director in January 1965 and rose to President two years and eight months later. He was an officer from the technical side with specialist training in printing technology.
Selection
In the September 1967 board reshuffle, Tetsuro Honda and Giichi Aichi were promoted to Managing Director, while the two Senior Managing Directors, Tatsuo Yogata and Taro Yanagawa, stepped back to Director. The change of President came in the same September 1967, when he became President in place of Saburota Yamada, who had held the post since December 1948. The two retiring Senior Managing Directors became Director and Senior Adviser in January 1968, and in the same month Tadashi Adachi became Chairman of the Board. His appointment appears to have been part of a wholesale turnover of the senior ranks.
Initiatives
Over his 13 years in office, non-consolidated net sales rose 6.5 times, from ¥55.7 billion in the fiscal year ended May 1968 to ¥363.4 billion in the FY ended May 1980. Ordinary income grew from ¥6.3 billion in the FY ended May 1971 to ¥25.4 billion in the FY ended May 1980. In January 1971 Senior Managing Director Kazuo Suzuki also became President of Tokyo Shoseki, continuing a system in which officers of the parent company doubled as presidents and directors of group companies. In February 1981 he handed the presidency to that same Kazuo Suzuki.
