Background

Born in Tokyo in 1920, he graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in September 1944 and joined Toppan Printing in December 1945. He became General Manager of the Foreign Department in June 1960, a Director in January 1967, Managing Director in January 1969 and Senior Managing Director in January 1971. In January 1971, when he became Senior Managing Director, he also became President of Tokyo Shoseki, and he left its board in January 1975. In August 1978 he became Director and Executive Vice President. He was a career employee who had worked in both the overseas division and the management of group companies.

Education: Tokyo University of Commerce (now Hitotsubashi University) (1944)

Selection

It took him 35 years from joining to reach the presidency, and he spent two years and six months as Executive Vice President. In February 1981 he became President, succeeding Kaichi Sawamura, who had been President for 13 years from September 1967. Yoshito Aratama, who left his post as Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in July 1970 and joined the company that October, was listed on the same board as Senior Managing Director, meaning that an officer from the bureaucracy had also risen to Senior Managing Director. His promotion appears to have followed the seniority order of career employees.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended May 1980, before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥363.4 billion and ordinary income ¥25.4 billion. Net sales grew to ¥412.1 billion and ordinary income to ¥27.8 billion in the FY ended May 1981, right after he took office, and to ¥531.0 billion and ¥34.2 billion in the FY ended May 1984. Net income also rose from ¥13.6 billion in the FY ended May 1981 to ¥16.0 billion in the FY ended May 1984. In June 1991 he handed the presidency to Hiromichi Fujita.
