Selection

In April 2008 he succeeded Kazuo Tsukuda as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2008, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥3,203.0 billion, operating income ¥136.0 billion and net income ¥61.3 billion, the highest of the preceding five years. In FY ended March 2010, the year after he took office, net sales fell to ¥2,940.8 billion and operating income to ¥65.7 billion.

Initiatives

In summer 2011 a full business integration with Hitachi was reported, but it was denied, citing differences in scale and other reasons, and fell through. Negotiations were restructured around thermal power alone, and on November 29, 2012 a basic agreement was reached on integrating the thermal power systems businesses, with ownership set at 65% Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and 35% Hitachi. In shipbuilding, the company withdrew from general-purpose merchant ships in 2012 with a policy of concentrating on technically demanding ship types with few competitors, and in 2011 it took an order for two large cruise ships from Europe's AIDA Cruises.
