Background

He joined Mitsubishi Corporation in 1925 and transferred to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1938. Coming from a trading company rather than the factory floor, he became President in May 1969 and served until December 1971.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics, Commerce (1925)

Selection

In May 1969 he succeeded Fumihiko Kono as President. In the five years since the merger, orders had grown 2.1 times, net sales doubled and pre-tax income risen 1.4 times. Total net sales for fiscal 1968 were ¥627.2 billion, almost double the three companies' combined ¥319.4 billion just before the merger.

Initiatives

Makita planned to raise capital expenditure from about ¥17 billion in fiscal 1968 to about ¥30 billion in fiscal 1969, and carried out a one-for-four capital increase to fund part of it. Retained earnings, including special depreciation and various provisions, came to over ¥9 billion, exceeding the previous year. The automobile division, which accounted for nearly 30% of sales, transferred its operations to Mitsubishi Motors in June 1970.
